I did not want to waste time building siege machines. The wooden walls could be reduced by axes. We had a drekar crew of Danes. Many of them had the two-handed axe. Along with Petr Jorgensen’s archers I believed they would gain us entry. We still had food we had taken from Héroult. My horsemen had also captured horses and cattle. As we did not need to eat them I had them sent back to Rouen. We prepared for our attack. We had enough leaders for me to have an attack on five different points around the walls. That would spread the defenders out. I had Gurt the Dane and his men with me. With my drekar crew and Petr’s archers we were the largest of the warbands and so we took the main gate. It was wooden and had two wooden towers.

Petr and his archers advanced and sent a hail of arrows at the towers and the gatehouse. I am not sure if they hit many of the defenders but they kept their heads down and allowed Gurt and his Danes to race towards the gate. I led the rest of my men behind raised shields. The crack of axes on wood soon filled the air. I saw defenders attempt to throw rocks. Petr’s archers ended that threat. All around the walls my other men, Finnbjǫrn, Ragnar, Bergil Fast Blade, were all attacking the wooden walls of De Forgis. It would be a matter of time before we broke through and we had plenty of that. We had begun the attack at dawn. It would be many hours until darkness fell. My horsemen had prevented the men of De Forgis sending for help. We did not need to risk our men.

“Shield wall. Wedge formation.”

Gurt and his men would just break through the gate. Then it would be up to me and my men to exploit the breach. He and his men attacked the gate with a determination I admired. Perhaps they were trying to show me that he and his Danes were made of sterner stuff than Guthrum. There was a crack and a crash. Gurt raised his axe. The gate was broken. The Franks would have braced it with wood but that would not stop us.

I raised my spear and began the chant as we ran towards the gate.
